Give tenant Photofusion relaunch this Thursday 4th with a Print Swap Party!

We’re so excited to welcome our latest Give tenants, both already pillars in Brixton’s community, the lovely Photofusion and Parallax Coop who have just taken up residence on our 2nd floor. Their entrance is around the back up past Brixton Rec.

For their (re)launch event and a chance to welcome you into their new space Photofusion are hosting a Print Swap Party on Thursday 4th April 6pm-10pm. There’ll be DJs, a bar, a free drink and the chance to pick up a great print - buy your tickets here and check out how it works below...

Many of you have been before – but just in case – here’s how the night goes:

  • You arrive at our shiny new space clutching a print

  • You hang your print on a numbered string – good chance to take a look around and pick your favourite spot!

  • Grab a drink (on us) and catch up with your friends

  • After an hour or so, everyone’s prints are up. We will invite everyone to pick a number from a hat, and find out what print they got

  • You get to take home the print with that number!

The rules….

  • You don’t need to be an award winning photographer (but you can be!)

  • All prints must be unframed and unmounted

  • You don’t need to bring a photographic print

  • Whatever you bring, it must be yours to give away

  • If you don’t bring a print, you can’t enter the swap but you can still come for the party!

Rosie Restart Party this weekend at 3Space International House

The Restart Project, Give tenants on our Community Initiatives Floor, are hosting a Rosie Restart Party this Saturday 1:00-3:30pm at 3Space International House.

Restart Parties are learning events where volunteers help people fix their own electronics. This event is only for women and non-binary people and is a fantastic opportunity to bring along a broken electronic device (from troublesome toasters to problematic phones) and diagnose and repair faults with your own and other people’s appliances. Please make sure you register your attendance here.

The Restart Project is a people-powered social enterprise that aims to fix our relationship with electronics. It began in 2013 out of frustration with the throwaway, consumerist model of electronics that were sold, and the growing mountain of e-waste that it’s leaving behind. As well as hosting Restart Parties – now taking place across the world – they run a school’s programme and use their collected “Repair data” to campaign for changes and better, more sustainable products

Disclaimer: Repair parties are a community self-repair space. Attending means that you take responsibility for your own gadget. Please back up your data. One item per person, and no microwaves please!

YFood Tech Wednesday at 3Space International House

We are very excited to this week be hosting our first YFood Tech Wednesday!

YFood Tech Wednesday is a free monthly meetup for Food Tech startups and future-preneurs, held every month, on a Wednesday, across multiple cities.

Started in London in 2013 the meetups were created by the YFood founders who were struggling to find support and solutions for the challenges they faced within their own Food Tech startups. Having looked to the tech and food communities separately to solve their challenges but finding that neither was suitable, they decided to build their own community, which evolved into regular meetups and the founding of YFood.

This Wednesday 27th March they are joined by Riya Grover, Founder and CEO of Feedr, a curated marketplace which allows individuals to order healthy, nutritious food from London's best artisan vendors at their workplace. After Riva’s talk there will be a Q&A session followed by a few drinks and a chance to network!

Register here for your FREE space and get to the event space at 3Space International House between 6:45-10 to ask your burning questions and meet and mingle with other interesting and like-minded people.

First in a series of cross-generational 'Great Debates' - Gentrification of Brixton

What are your opinions on gentrification in Brixton? Do you think food waste could be managed more effectively? Why do you think homelessness is such a prevalent issue?

Be Enriched and Compliments of The House have organised a cross-generational “Great Debate” for local people to discuss a variety of important issues and their local impact in Brixton. They are specifically advertising for ages 16-19 and 55+ to attend.

In the first of a series of debates, on Monday 18th March, discussion will be focussed on the gentrification of Brixton- if you’ve got something to say they want you to come along to the event space at 3Space International House. Those aged 16-19 are asked to arrive at 4:30 and those 55+ at 5pm. The debate will take place from 5:30-6:30, followed by refreshments and networking opportunities. To register your interest please sign up to the event here.

Both charities are based on the Community Initiatives floor of 3Space International House. Compliments of the House is a food redistribution charity working in Brixton Village and Be Enriched is a youth and community charity, one of their projects is Brixton People’s Kitchen, and they have also recently opened a new cafe in Vauxhall.  If you are interested in volunteering with either organisation please contact them through their websites or follow them on twitter @be_enriched.

The Power of Apprenticeships for Creative and Digital Industries

This morning over pastries and coffee WhiteHat and Lambeth Council spoke to local businesses about providing exciting professional opportunities for young Lambeth residents and the support networks in place for those who do so.

The breakfast presentation focussed on the power of apprenticeships for the creative and digital industries, and with video production companies, architects and some of our very own 3Space tenants attending we’re really excited to see what prospects grow from this. After the presentation was a networking break out with the council answering further questions on how they can work with businesses to support any apprenticeship offers. We’re very happy to be using our event space at 3Space International House for such talks that encourage community and youth engagement with smaller business and it’s part of our continued cooperation with Lambeth Council to provide a space to do so.

All of the leftover food was passed on to “Compliments of the House”, a not for profit based on International House’s Community Initiatives Floor, who will redistribute it for free from Brixton Village to local people.

This post will be updated shortly with how to find out more information about apprenticeships, if you missed the breakfast.

Compliments of the House Launch Event

Last night in the event space at 3Space International House Compliments of the House, who are based on the Community Initiatives Floor, celebrated the next stage of their venture as they open their hugely successful operation in Brixton Village.

This not for profit organisation, which started in Brixton, has implemented a tried and tested model whereby they will collect surplus food from commercial businesses every day in Brixton and distribute it free of charge to those most in need from a retail space in the Village.

Every year 7.2 million tonnes of food is wasted, of that 4.4 million tonnes could have been eaten. The initiative aims to reduce food waste and promote a greener attitude, whilst simultaneously fostering a safe and community-orientated space open to all. COTH also offers volunteering places to its regular visitors and encourages work placements in local businesses.

The event was attended by Lambeth councillors and the Mayor who all praised the hard work of COTH, and by a few of their regulars who highlighted how this not for profit was going deeper than simply providing a hot meal.

Find them in Brixton Village Monday-Friday between 7pm-9pm.
