Drew Talks: Celebrating Brixton with GIVE Tenant Migrateful
The first Drew Talks of the year commenced on the 7th floor last Thursday, 16th January, celebrating one of our very own GIVE tenants. In this informative talk, Jess and Anne shared the inspiring story and empowering mission of the food-based charity Migrateful, who run cookery classes taught by refugees and migrant chefs from around the world. The purpose of their work is to encourage social and cultural integration, and they do this through food; recipes rebuilding lives.
Jess’ lightbulb moment came when she explored how easy it is for cultural dishes and food to migrate around the world, but how difficult it is for people. In the talk, they discussed the difference between asylum seekers, refugees and migrants and the legal, linguistic and social barriers that people face when they arrive in this country. Based on the Community Initiatives floor here in Brixton, Jess mentioned the positive impact being a part of the 3Space community has had on the charity. As a part of the BuyGiveWork scheme, for every space bought, a desk is given away for free to charities and social enterprises who work within the Lambeth community. Since joining 3Space, Migrateful has been able to focus more of their time and resources on promoting cultural connection, collaboration and celebration, and have grown in success in the last year, including being nominated for a Social Enterprise UK Award.
With a busy and exciting year ahead, they are looking for volunteers to support them with various roles. If you’d like to get involved and support their mission, click here!
Drew Talks: Celebrating Brixton is a monthly networking event organised by BUY tenant Drew London on the 7th floor, as a celebration of our community, both within and outside of the building! These informal and inspiring talks invite a local guest speaker to share their start-up story., including free beers provided by Brixton Brewery and end in the Tap Room in the heart of Brixton.
